Rhyming Locks

Age Group:

Objectives:
  • Students will practice sight word recognition​
CDA Competency Standard:  
II.6.5a
  • Candidate promotes children’s vocabulary development.
Intentionally provides opportunities for children to learn new words

Materials: 
  • Several padlocks with matching keys
  • Sticky labels
  • Black marker
Procedure: 
  1. Write sight words on the sticky labels and affix them to the locks. Next, write rhyming sight words on the keys to the locks. Be sure that the keys and locks match with the correct rhyming words.
  2. Set out the keys and locks in a basket or shallow tray in the literacy center for children to use. 
Assessment: 
  • Children can self-assess throughout the activity by checking for the correct matches.
