Early Writing

As children learn the letter names and sounds they will naturally begin writing them.

Many programs begin children’s early writing by teaching them to write their names. Usually this is done by writing in all capital letters and later the combination of capital and lower case letters is taught. In addition to learning letters and how to write their names, children can be introduced to sight words during structured learning time as well as at the literacy center.
Sight words are sometimes called star words, high frequency words, snap words, or red words. The name of this category of words isn’t the important part. What is important about these words is that they occur so frequently that being able to recognize them means that children can recognize nearly 50% of words in the English language.
There are many ways to support the acquisition of these sight words through literacy centers. Consider the video below which shows children in a 1st grade class. Though many of the students have already mastered the basics of early literacy, they are participating in centers in a meaningful and engaging way.
