So often, adults can diminish the powerful relationship that pictures and words can have together. When you combine the two for children, it gives them the ability to better understand what is happening in the story. Drawings create meaning for children that spoken word may not. These illustrations help the earliest of readers associate actions and objects with words.  
Not only that, illustrations also appeal to children’s natural love of art. Picture books introduce children to all different types of art from the more abstract to more realistic paintings to photography, the possibilities are endless. The books give children access to some of the most talented artists who have devoted their entire lives to creating art for them. 
While some brush off picture books as “easy.” it is naïve to think that they do not hold just as much value to those reading them. The back and forth of words and images together help children of all ages develop a variety of literacy skills.
