(Unit 2) Topic 8: Promoting Early Literacy

3 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

Effective Literacy Center

Topic 8 Page 13

Literacy centers are more than just a collection of books and activities for children to figure out on their own. Literacy centers are most effective when they are used mindfully and are designed for maximum efficacy.

Organize!
If the materials are strewn about the center and are not put back in their places the children won’t know how to use them and they will quickly lose interest. Organize the materials and instruct students on the proper organization and placement of the items when they are through with them.
Routine
Be sure to introduce the center routines and structure to children often. Model and practice until it becomes a habit.
Make them fun
Children will not participate if the activities seem too much like work. While they are important academic concepts they should still be fun and engaging.

Make them meaningful
Align the activities in the literacy center with whatever topics or concepts your curriculum is focusing on.
Assess
In the current educational climate all things must be assessed. It is best to include a built in assessment so that children can self-assess their work or their understanding. If this is not possible, be sure that a teacher checks in on the progress of the children often. Some programs may even take a Montessori approach and require children to have their work checked by a teacher before being officially complete.
