Learning to read and write sight words is an integral component to early childhood education. There are multiple ways in which this can be done through literacy center activities.
Some suggestions:
Rainbow Writing
Materials:
  • Printed sight word pages
  • Multiple crayons
Procedure:
  1. Children should trace the sight words with multiple colored crayons. This gives them practice spelling the sight words several times.

​Freezer Bag Painting
Materials:
  • Gallon sized ziplock bag
  • Colored tempera paint
Procedure:
  1. Place the paint in the ziplock bag and seal it well. Place the bags in the literacy center along with sight word cards.
  2. Children should use their fingers to write the words on the bag.
Extension: Children can also use Q-tips, chopsticks, or the ends of paintbrushes to write the words while practicing their tripod grip.

Outdoor Water Writing
Materials:
  • Water
  • Paintbrushes
Procedure:
  1. Choose a large area with pavement that is easily accessible. Bring paintbrushes and jars of water outside.
  2. Children should be encouraged to use the paint brushes and water to write their names, sight words, or letter shapes.
What does pre-emergent writing look like for infants?
​The infants in your care may be starting to try to feed themselves with a spoon. This often happens around the same time infants show an interest in how other kinds of tools and instruments can be used. Infants can become fascinated with writing instruments and how to mark and scribble with them. This practice guide has some ideas for how you can encourage infants to experiment with early writing. 

Crayons, pencils, pens, or any other writing instruments that are easy for young children to grasp and hold will work best. Making marks and scribbles comes naturally to most children. Try showing children how to use drawing and writing instruments to scribble. It is often all it takes for them to try to do it on their own.
