Invisible Number Sensory Bin

Age Group:
  • Toddler
  • Preschool
Objectives:
  • Children will experience a new sensory activity while becoming familiar with numbers

Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Always use caution with anything that young children might put in their mouths.

CDA Competency Standard:
II.4.3a
Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses.
a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities
Materials:
  • Hot glue gun
  • Parchment paper or cutting board
  • Colored dry rice
  • Large bin
  • Optional: tools such as scoops, brushes, cups
Procedure:
  1. Prepare the materials by making numbers out of hot glue on the parchment paper or cutting board. When the letters are cooled and dry, peel them off and mix them in the bin with the colored rice.
  2. Invite the toddler to explore the sensory bin and discover the “invisible” numbers. Provide scoops, cups, brushes or other tools to move the rice around, if you desire.
Assessment:
  • Observe the toddler’s ability to recognize numbers that they’ve seen before. Did they know the names of the numbers?
