​The early childhood math center can contain numerous items, games, materials and more. To assist in creating engaging math centers here are some simple and effective ideas.​
Picture
​Play with shape puzzles and blocks.
Manipulating three-dimensional objects — playing with a shape-sorter box, for example — will introduce children to basic geometry as well as help develop his fine motor skills and spatial reasoning.
Play games that require children to understand the concept of near and far or under and over.

Let them practice learning such concepts as volume and quantity by filling cups and bowls with water or sand and transferring contents from one container to another.

Graphing Mats

Materials
  • Large graphing mat (with categories written on it with an overhead marker)
  • Small items that can be classified
Procedure:
  • Materials should be accessible for students. Children should sort the items into categories and place them in their corresponding places on the graphing mat.
  • Materials can be adapted according to the age group, and objectives. 

Number Tower
Materials:
  • White Styrofoam cups
  • Sharpie marker

Procedure:
  • Write numbers one through ten upside down on the rims of the cups so that when they are stacked they can be seen.
  • Place materials in a bin or basket where children can easily access them. Children should stack the cups in number order.

Marble Match
Materials:
  • Colored marbles
  • Colored number cards

Procedure:
  • Children should match the correct number and color marbles to the corresponding cards.

Sort and Count Bottles
Materials:
  • Colored pom-poms
  • Clear bottles with colors and numbers on them
  • Tweezers

Procedure:
  • Place materials in a bin or basket where children can easily access them.
  • Children should use the tweezers to put the correct number of colored pom-poms in the correct bottles.

Shape Pizza​
Materials:
  • Large tan felt circles
  • Assorted felt shapes (red circles, green triangles, yellow rectangles, pink squares)
  • Cookie sheets

Procedure:
  • Place materials in a bin or basket where children can easily access them.
  • Encourage children to create their own pizzas using the felt shapes. Children can count the shapes and recite their names and colors.
