(Unit 2) Topic 5: Math for Young Children

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Introduction to Math Centers

Topic 5 Page 7

Picture
The math learning center is a common learning center in the early childhood classroom. These centers often involve manipulatives, paper, pencils, markers, small toys, and many other items. Children are encouraged to use the assorted materials daily as part of their learning center rotations.
The intriguing thing about the math centers in an early learning program is that math concepts can also transcend the math area and be included in other learning centers. For the purpose of this training, we will focus on the math center only, but do not let that limit your math center development ideas. Instead, consider adapting the suggestions given to fit the needs of your group of young children.
Math centers give deeper learning experiences to young children.

They allow for hands-on exploration and discovery of mathematical concepts that preschool children will need to know for kindergarten readiness. Each day children should have math activity time as well as time for center rotations which should include a math center. This training will discuss what that math center area can be like for educators and child care professionals to imitate in their programs.
