Where's My Home?

Age Group:

Objectives:
  • Students will identify the group that items belong in 
CDA Competency Standard: ​
II.5.1a
a) Activities encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery.

II.5.1b
b) Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences
Materials: 
  • Small items
  • Where's my Home? Printable (click here) or similar 
Procedure: 
  1. Print out the Where's my Home? Printable on cardstock or similar paper. Cut out the places and laminate if desired.
  2. During circle time or small group time gather a group of items and lay out the paper places.
  3. Show children the small items and ask them to decide, as a group, where they belong. Ask questions about the similarities, differences, needs, habits, etc.
  4. Place the items on the papers that they choose.
  5. Discuss the characteristics that make them connected. 
Assessment: 
  • Assess the process in identifying the properties that make sorting possible.
Extensions:
  • Increase the complexity of items and properties as you go.
  • Integrate different subject areas into this activity.
  • Use this to support social and emotional development
