Color Sorting Tubes

Age Group:
  • Preschool
Objectives:
  • Children will sort objects by color
CDA Competency Standard:
II.5.1a
a) Activities encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery.

II.5.1b
b) Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences
Materials:
  • Toilet paper tubes
  • Colored pom poms (or other like items)
  • Large piece of cardboard
  • Colored baskets, cups, or paper (in the same shades as the pom poms)
Procedure:
  1. Color toilet paper tubes to match the pom pom colors. If you have many colors, choose three or four that contrast the most.
  2. Glue toilet paper tubes to the cardboard, evenly spaced apart.
  3. Place the cardboard against a wall so that it is at a child’s height. You may wish to lean it temporarily or fasten it to the wall.
  4. Place corresponding baskets, cups, or pieces of paper under the colored tubes.
  5. Place the mixed up pom poms in a container nearby.
  6. Give a brief demonstration of how to use the new materials and allow children to begin sorting the colors.
Assessment:
  • Assess the sorting abilities of each child.
Extensions:
  • Increase types of colored materials to further the exploration
  • Add more colors and colored tubes
  • Combine color and size
  • Include pictures above tubes for specific sorting
