(Unit 2) Topic 4: Classifying and Sorting

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

Classification and Sorting Activities

Topic 4 Page 4

Let’s consider some of these examples of classification and sorting activities:

Seed Sorting

Seed Sorting
In this activity children are sorting different types of vegetable seeds into specific categories. They learn the names of the vegetables and have the opportunity to explore the differences in seeds. You could also try to have them sort the seeds by color, texture, or size.

Lucky Day Sensory Bin
Children use tongs to pick out different types of marshmallows from the sensory bin and group them in small cups. They practice comparing the marshmallows and deciding how some are alike and how some are different. You could extend this activity by also having children sort the cereal pieces.

Sensory Balloons

Sensory Balloons
This sensory activity provides an opportunity to feel and touch objects inside of balloons and match them with pictures of the objects. This requires children to build their critical thinking skills based upon previous experiences and sort accordingly.

Letter Racecars
Children will match the letters on top of the cars to the letters in the parking lot. They are identifying the same letters based on visual characteristics. You can extend this activity by using upper and lower case letters or shapes and colors.

Nature Sensory Board

Nature Sensory Board
This sensory board is designed for infants to explore different groupings of natural items. The items are previously sorted by category so the infant can explore. An important piece to this lesson is to talk with the child about the categories and how they feel similar or different.
