To truly understand classification it is important to consider some examples. There are many levels of classification and sorting activities that correspond with developmental levels. For example, a toddler may show a preference for certain types of toys. This shows that he or she is classifying those objects based on whatever is most appealing to them. There is a relationship and a connection there. A first grade child may begin classifying types of shapes based on how many sides they have. A square and a rectangle have four sides so they go together. Later he or she may classify them based on their names and identify them by the length of their sides. Now the square and rectangle are in different groups.
