Not a Stick

Age Group:
  • Preschool
Objectives:
  • Students will use critical thinking and problem solving skills to create a tool out of an ordinary object
CDA Competency Standard:
II.5.2a
Materials and equipment stimulate children's thinking and problem-solving
a) Materials and equipment provide a variety of opportunities for cognitive development.
Materials:
  • The book Not a Stick available at Amazon
  • One stick per student
  • Large white paper
  • Crayons or other coloring materials
  • Glue
Anticipatory Set:
Read the book Not a Stick at circle time or story time. After the story, take the class outside for them to collect one stick each. They can choose a stick that works for whatever they can imagine, just like in the book.
Procedure:
  1. Students will glue their stick onto the large sheet of paper and begin to draw around it. They will turn their stick into something other than a simple stick, just like in the book.
  2. When students are done creating, the teacher should converse with the students about what they have created with their sticks. The teacher should write “This is not a stick…” at the top of the page and “…this is a __________” at the bottom.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record the children’s creation process while making something with their sticks. Were they able to recall elements of the story when explaining their stick creations?
