Playdough Impressions
Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.

Age Group: ​ 
  • ​Infants
  • Mobile Infants

Objectives:
  • Children will experience a new sensory activity
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.4.3a
Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses.
  • a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials:  
  • Playdough in several colors
  • Assorted objects such as pinecones, legos, toys, etc
  • Cookie sheet
  • Playdough rolling pin
Procedure: 
  • Find a quiet corner to sit with the infant. Combine several lumps of playdough and mix together to create an interesting swirl pattern. Talk with the infant about the colors combining and point out the swirls and whirls of the clay.
  • Roll the playdough flat onto the cookie sheet and encourage the infant to touch it and press their hand and fingers into the dough. Next, press the objects into the dough and encourage the infant to touch the impressions, discussing the process as you go along.
Assessment:  
  • Observe and record the infant’s reaction and participation in the activity. Did they react to the different imprint textures in the dough?    ​

  This lesson can be adapted for toddlers by bringing materials into the playdough area that are used specifically to make impressions in the dough. Toddlers should be given more independence with close supervision.
