One thing about playdough that is often hard to accept for child care professionals is the mess. Especially if the children are involved in making the playdough (which they should be as much as possible) there is going to be a mess.  

• You will have a lot of cleaning to do.
• The kids may get playdough or slime on their clothing.
• You will have to watch them closely.
• The activity will take longer than expected in most cases.​​​

• Will the kids learn something new? 
• Will they develop skills in a fun and engaging way? 
• Will they make memories? 
• Is it worth it?

​Like it or not, there is going to be an extra degree of work attributed to playdough play in any program. As a child care professional and caregiver, however, there is always extra work involved when designing lessons plans, planning activities, and arranging curriculum. Playdough mess is another one of those activities that involves inherent work. Quality child care programs and staff know that the mess and the extra work is well worth it for the children in their care. This is especially true when children are involved in creating the playdough. Yes, the mess is annoying and in a perfect world there would be no mess, but that mess is not the end of the world.

Our advice is to embrace it, make the best of it and focus on the benefits for the child.
