(Unit 2) Topic 1: Art Integration

Integrating Art into the Curriculum

Topic 1 Page 6

You may be asking yourself why it’s important to integrate art into the different areas of your curriculum, especially if you already have a designated time for art instruction already.

The answer is simple: the arts add meaning to every other subject!
When students are given opportunities to connect art to history, science, and even math, they are learning those subjects on a deeper level. Every second in your classroom is precious learning time. The easiest way to squeeze more art into your day is to integrate it into other areas of learning.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts defines arts integration as "an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject and meets evolving objectives." As teachers, we strive to make as many connections as possible for our students to enhance knowledge and create well-rounded learners.
The following are just a few ways you can incorporate art into other areas of learning.

Visual Arts
  • Cut snowflakes and examine symmetry for mathematics
  • Practice writing skills by creating a scrap book about friends
  • After learning about the parts of a flower, use real flowers as a tool to paint

Drama
  • Create an excavation dinosaur dig for a dramatic play area
  • Practice retelling skills by having a reader’s theater for The Three Little Pigs

Dance
  • Challenge your students to work together to create a dance about the different seasons
  • Learn about different cultures while studying their traditional dances

Song
  • Use various songs as writing prompts
  • Introduce poetry by breaking down a song into bars
  • Work with your students to write a math rap about shapes and their properties

Research integration ideas and don’t be afraid to come up with some on your own. You will see that the possibilities are infinite!
