Art Integration: Exploring Creativity with Young Children

Art Myths
In our society, there are often common misconceptions about teaching the creative arts.

Let’s start by exploring some and begin to understand why they are incorrect.

Myth:
“I’m terrible at art, so there’s no way I can teach it.”
Whether or not you think you are a proficient artist or not is of no consequence. Art is an essential component of development for children and is most certainly needed in all classrooms. It is your job as an educator to be fluent enough in every subject area to teach it.

Myth:
“I don’t have time to include art into my curriculum.”
Every teacher is stressed for time. The best ones figure out ways to combine subjects and become efficient with their time. We will explore ways to integrate art into other areas of study a little bit later on in this course.

Myth:
“The arts aren’t ‘academic’. They are just fun for kids.”
This statement couldn’t be more false. Children are learning how to think creatively when they explore different art mediums. This ability will carry with them to other areas of study, most notably math and science.

Myth:
“Art can’t be assessed, so I can’t teach it in my classroom.”
While creativity itself can be difficult to measure, there are other elements that can be assessed while children are exploring art. For example, social interactions with other students as well as fine and gross motor skills are a part of many art activities.

Myth:
“Creativity isn’t something you can teach. It’s something you are born with.”
Just like any other ability, art takes time, effort, and motivation to develop.  Art is not an innate ability. Thinking otherwise is, quite frankly, a cop out.
