Measuring with Worms

Age Group: 
  • Preschool
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children. 
Objectives:
  • Student will practice measuring objects with non-standard units 
CDA Competency Standard: ​
II.5.3a
  • Candidate’s interactions promote children’s thinking and problem solving
a) Facilitates children’s thinking and creative problem-solving skills 
Materials: 
  • Gummy worms (to be used as measuring tool)
  • writing utensil
  • various items from around the classroom (books, crayons, blocks, etc.)
  • measurement worksheet . 
Procedure: 
  1. Prep for activity by setting up measuring station. This lesson is designed to be an introductory/exploratory activity. Invite students to join you at the station. You may read the observation worksheet with them if they need assistance. When all students are finished with the activity, have a circle time to discuss measurement. Ask them their thoughts on how to measure. 

    You can ask questions like:
  2. “what does ‘measure’ mean?”
  3. “why do we want to know how to measure?”
  4. “why did some people get different numbers for their lengths?” 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record how the student measures. You do not need to “grade” the worksheets. They are to be used as a resource for students.
