Nature Sorting and Classifying

Age Group: 
  • Infant
  • Toddler
Objectives:
  • Students will compare natural materials with manmade materials

Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Always use caution with anything that young children might put in their mouths. 

CDA Competency Standard: ​
I.3.2b
  • Developmentally appropriate materials are available
b) A variety of materials are provided for children to explore
Materials: 
  • 3 Baskets
  • Assorted natural materials such as pinecones, smooth rocks, feathers, leaves, etc.
  • Assorted manmade materials such as paintbrushes, plastic blocks, small cups, etc.
Procedure: 
  1. Place all of the items into one basket. Arrange the other two baskets in arms reach and sit with the child to explore the objects. Help them to explore the objects and talk to them about what they are and where they come from. Discuss the difference between natural objects and manmade objects with the child.
  2. Sort the materials into different categories using the baskets.  
Assessment: 
  • Assess the child’s reactions to the materials. Could they tell the difference between the manmade and natural objects?
  • Assess older children’s sorting and classifying of the objects.
