Cause and Effect Sensory Bag

Age Group:
  • Infant
Objectives:
  • Children will explore cause and effect with provided materials

Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Always use caution with anything that young children might put in their mouths.

CDA Competency Standard:
II.5.1a
Activities encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery
a) Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences
Materials:
  • Gallon size Zip Lock bag
  • Colored hair gel or similar substance
  • Black sharpie marker
  • Marble
Procedure:
To prepare materials:
  1. Use the black marker to draw a curved line onto the inside of the Zip Lock bag.
  2. Add hair gel and marble to the Zip Lock bag, close securely. You may add clear packing tape around the edges of the bag if you desire.
For the activity:
  1. Invite the infant to explore the sensory bag by moving the marble along the black line. Young infants may enjoy the texture of the gel in the bag, while mobile infants may be fascinated with the movement of the marble.
Assessment:
  • Did the infant explore the relationship of cause and effect? Did they seem to understand that when they pushed the marble it moved? Record any observations that you make.
