Color Mixing Discovery Bottle

Age Group: 
  • Infant
  • Toddler
Objectives:
  • Children will discover color mixing in a hands-on way

Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Always use caution with anything that young children might put in their mouths.  

CDA Competency Standard:  
II.5.1a
Activities and materials encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery.
​a) Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences
Materials: 
  • Clean, clear plastic jar or bottle
  • Shaving cream
  • A few marbles
  • Colored water in two shades
Procedure: 
  1. Add shaving cream, a few marbles and colored water to the bottle and secure the lid.
  2. Give the bottle to the infant and encourage them to shake, roll, and swirl the bottle to mix the colors.
  3. Explain what is happening to the colors in the bottle as the infant plays with it.
Assessment: 
  • Did the infant notice the color changes and realize that the more they shook or rolled the bottle, the more the colors changed?
