2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Examples of Materials that Develop Musical Awareness

Topic 7 Page 5

There are many different types of activities and materials that are designed to help the children develop musical awareness. The following are just a few examples.
Picture
Instruments
Instruments are a great tool for developing musical awareness. They encourage children to make their own music by experimenting with the different materials.
Picture
Multicultural Music
Exposing children to multicultural music, such as Latin and Irish, expands their horizons and begins the explorations of different cultures (Jalongo & Isenberg, 1997).

Assorted Styles of Music
There are many different styles of music (e.g., lullabies, classical, and rock and roll). These styles can have many different effects on young children. Some music styles are soothing and relaxing while others make the children want to get up and move (Feierabend, 1996).

Assorted Props
Props such as balls, scarves, and streamers help children explore movement through music. For example, as you play recorded music, roll a ball back and forth to a child (Jalongo & Isenberg, 1997). Each of the materials mentioned above can help children to develop musical awareness.
