Objectives:
  • Children will discover chemical reactions in a hands on way
CDA Competency Standard:  
II.5.2a
  • Activities and equipment stimulate children’s thinking and problem-solving.
​​a) Activities and equipment provide a variety of opportunities for cognitive development
Materials: 
  • Pie tin
  • Milk
  • Food coloring
  • Dish soap
  • Q-tip
Procedure: 
  1. Place a small amount of milk in the pie tin and place several drops of different food color into the milk. Invite the child to observe as you add one drop of dish soap to the milk. The colors and milk will scatter because of the chemical reaction of the fat in the milk and the dish soap. Invite the child to use the Q-tip to move the colors around. 
Assessment: 
  • Note any reactions or questions that the child has while observing and participating in the activity.
